FAQs

  • What kinds of problems or clients do you work with?

I provide highly specialized, expert treatment to these kinds of problems and clients:

    -Relationship and family issues

-Marriage & sex therapy, divorce, infidelity

    -Pregnancy, postpartum, infertility, and motherhood

-Sexual issues, including sexual shame, trauma/EMDR, and purity culture

-Spiritual issues, such as religious trauma, faith deconstruction, and Christian therapy

    -Boundaries, identity, assertiveness, and self-care

-Helping professionals, such as educators, healthcare and mental health professionals, and ministry leaders

  • How do I know you are the right fit for me?

We can schedule a free 15-minute consultation call to determine your needs and if I am the right person to work with you. If I don’t believe I am the best person to help you, I will refer you to someone who may be a better fit.

I am very selective about the clients I work with to make sure you are getting the most out of your time and money. I only work with clients who meet my specialties, so that I can say with confidence that I am uniquely and ideally suited to help you.

  • What kinds of clients or problems do you not treat?

I do not treat substance use, addictions, eating disorders, chronic health problems, schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD or OCD as the primary problem, or children. Clients with active suicidal ideation or self-harm need a more intensive level of care than I provide. I am also not the therapist for you if you just want short-term, basic help for symptoms of anxiety and depression.

  • Are you a Christian therapist?

I am a Christian who is a licensed therapist. Most of my clients say they want “a Christian therapist but not Christian counseling”. They want someone who come from a Christian background and understands their experience and values, but doesn’t push beliefs onto them or tell them to just read the Bible and pray. I take a more nuanced approach to faith than that. I welcome clients across the faith spectrum and allow you to decide if you want to talk about spirituality in therapy or not. I help you figure out your beliefs and come to a place of peace and congruence in your faith.

  • How much does therapy cost?

My standard fee is $160 for individual therapy (45-50 minutes) and $175 for intakes and couples therapy (60 minutes). I am out of network for insurance and can provide you with a superbill for reimbursement if you have out of network insurance benefits. This means you would pay the session fee at the time of the appointment and later seek reimbursement from your insurance company. You are responsible for all costs upfront. I keep your credit card on file for automatic charging. I accept HSA or FSA cards as well as major credit cards. Reduced fee is available to my current clients with financial need.

You can see if you have out-of-network coverage by logging into your insurance company website or by calling the number on the back of your card. Here is a step-by-step guide with a list of questions to ask in case this is helpful.

  • Why does therapy cost so much?

I respect that therapy is a big investment of your time, energy, and yes, money. There are many reasons for the cost of therapy, including business expenses, the cost of our education and training, and problems with working with insurance companies.

If you decide that this investment is right for you, I am confident that therapy with me is worth the cost. When you work with me, you are getting a highly trained, specialized, doctoral-level, licensed psychologist with over 13 years of experience. With this comes added confidentiality, a better client experience, more confidence in the process, and quicker results.

Email me and let’s schedule a free 15-minute consultation call. If you and I are the right fit, I am confident that therapy will be worth your investment. If we aren’t the right fit, I’ll let you know and refer you to somehow else.

If you cannot afford therapy with me, a reduced fee may be available to clients of exceptional fit and financial need. Or I recommend you seek out a therapist in training or a community mental health center to meet your needs.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel or reschedule a session, 24 hours notice during business days (Monday through Friday) is required. If canceled with less than 24 hours notice, you will be charged the cost of the session. This is standard policy in private practice. The reason for this policy is 1) we want you to take your mental health seriously and make your therapy a priority, 2) improving self-care, time management, boundaries, etc. may be therapeutic goals that are reinforced by this policy, 3) your session time is held for you and is difficult to fill in short notice, 4) your therapist is only paid when seeing a client, yet still has to pay office rent, childcare, and other expenses. Telehealth is offered if you cannot come in for your appointment.

  • Does therapy really work?

It’s normal to be skeptical and even fearful before making an investment in therapy. But therapy does work! Studies show that the majority of people start to feel better after just a couple of sessions, and almost everyone can benefit from therapy in one way or another!

Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. I encourage you to try it out for two sessions and see how you feel. If you think a different approach might better help you, let’s discuss that and see what we can do differently. Or if we determine that another therapist might be better suited for your needs, I will refer you to someone else.

  • How long does therapy last?

I ask that my clients commit to at least 3-6 months of therapy. There is no set expectation of how long therapy lasts, but it can take several months to see a lasting change. I usually start off seeing my clients weekly or every other week. After a few months, many of my clients feel ready to see me every 3 weeks or once a month. It all depends on your needs and goals.

  • Do you provide in office or virtual sessions?

I provide therapy appointments in my Knoxville, TN office. I provide virtual sessions to anyone located in the state of Tennessee. Licensure laws only allow me to provide therapy to residents of Tennessee. Thank you for understanding that I am not able to provide out of state referrals.

I provide Coaching for specific specialties anywhere in the world. Please visit my Coaching website to learn more about those services.

  • Do you prescribe medication or provide psychological testing?

No, I do not prescribe medication myself. If we determine that we think medication could benefit you, I will refer you to your primary care provider or a psychiatrist to determine your needs.

I do not currently provide psychological testing (sometimes called an assessment or evaluation). I refer to UT Psychological Clinic or other private psychologists for these services.

  • What is the difference between a psychologist and a counselor?

All mental health professionals go through extensive training. As a psychologist, I have 5 years of graduate school, which included 3 years of clinical practicums, and then 1 year of full-time internship. After that, I completed one more year of postdoctoral work before obtaining licensure in 2014. This means I have cumulatively over 13 years of clinical experience.

Counselors and other Masters-level mental health professionals usually have 2-3 years of graduate school followed by 2-3 years of work experience before obtaining licensure. The length and the depth of the training is the main difference between psychologists and counselors as well as the focus of our training.
