Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT, mindfulness, and somatic based therapy in Knoxville, TN

What is DBT?

I specialize in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that blends mindfulness meditation, interpersonal skills, and emotion regulation skills to help you improve your mood, reduce stress, and get along better with others.

In DBT, we practice walking the middle path to avoid black and white thinking. This approach was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan at University of Washington, and has been rigorously tested and proven effective for many emotional and behavioral problems.

I tailor DBT to meet the needs of Christian clients, integrating Christian meditations and spiritual practices into your treatment.

In addition to DBT, I use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to help you recognize the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Then we work on changing your thoughts to be more healthy and balanced.

DBT may be a good fit for you if you experience any of the following problems:

  • Unstable moods

  • Depression & anxiety, feeling empty, hopeless, and worrying about the future

  • Unhealthy relationship patterns

  • Shame and self-judgment

  • Racing thoughts and difficulty staying in the present

  • Borderline personality disorder

It’s not enough to just change your thoughts though. We have to get your mind, heart, and body on the same page.

So I use somatic and mindfulness-based techniques like meditation, body scan, breathwork, and relaxation to help you get in touch with your body. These skills will allow you to feel more alignment between your mind and body.
